PC Magazine Guide to Notebook and Laptop Computers comprises two parts (as well as a disk with utility programs of interest to laptop users, which is described later). Part One provides some laptop basics and gives advice about the buying process. Part Two is about using your laptop on the road and at home. Chapter 1 lays out the case for (and against) laptops, defines the terminology, and explains the various categories of laptops and portables. If you've spent a lot of time around PCs and portables, you should head straight to ... Chapters 2 and 3 describe the features you'll find on laptops and portables, and lay out the pros and cons of every feature. Even if you've bought laptops before, you'll be surprised at how quickly the market changes. I'm a firm believer that you can't have too much information. I've bought or specified laptops for myself, for friends, and for relatives on more than two dozen occasions in the past few years, written more than a dozen articles, and won a pair of Computer Press Association awards for my writing on portable computers and still I learn new things every time I get involved in the buying process.
