Abstrak:

The three works of James Joyce that will be discussed in this research are
Dubliners, A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man, and Ulysses. These three
works are frequently studied in terms of their status as modernist works, as well
as the complexities of the themes of national identity that appear in these three
pieces. Dubliners addresses the impact of Irish nationalism on individuals` lives.
Characters grapple with their relationship to their country, culture, and history. A
Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man presents a multidimensional exploration of
how an individual navigate their place within their country`s cultural and political
landscape. Ulysses engages with Irish nationalism in multifaceted ways. It
critiques the romanticized ideals of nationalism by exposing the inconsistencies
and contradictions within nationalist sentiments. This research aims to identify
aspects of globalization, colonialism, and Irish nationalism in Dubliners, A
Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man, and Ulysses and examine the role of each
aspect in Joyce’s narratives. The method of this research includes close reading
of the research objects and texts that discusses Dubliners, A Portrait of the Artist
as a Young Man and Ulysses that relates to this research. Dubliners, A Portrait of
the Artist as a Young Man and Ulysses presents us a unique exploration on
nationalism, colonialism, globalization, and identity.
