RANCANGAN PROGRAM UNTUK MENINGKATKAN KOMPETENSI INTERKULTURAL PADA MAHASISWA PENDATANG DI UNIVERSITAS KRISTEN SATYA WACANA SALATIGA
This research js b~~ed on difficulties of Papuan-origin students in Satya Wacana
Christian University (SWCU) in performing intercultural adjustmemto Javanese
culture which has extreme differences to their origin. In performing effective
intercultural adjustment, one needs an optimal intercultural competence (Fantini,
2009). This research will explore SWCU Papuan-origin students' intercultural
competence and dissect which component of intercultural competence that has not
been mastered by the students. The result will lead to a development of training
program aimed to increase intercultural competence of SWCU Papuan-origin
students.
A quantitative method was used to produce categorical descriptive analysis. 188
SWCU Papuan-origin students from Papua province and West Papua province
participate in this study and undertook intercultural competence questionnaire.
Questionnaire was developed based on Intercultural Competence theory from Fantini
(2009).
Study findings' shows that most of the Papuan-origin students (58.51%) students
have moderate-high level of intercultural competence, meaning that most Papuan
origin students do not possess adequateability in achieving their goals in order to
performing intercultural adjustment. Further investigation in each component of
intercultural competence indicated that respondents in general have not mastered
intercultural awareness component optimally.
Hence, training program designed from this findings will specifically aimed to
increase Papuan-origin students' intercultural awareness component to enable them
achieve adequate intercultural competence. This intervention is designed into two
days training by applying experiential learning principles.
