Periodontopathic Bacteria Study on the Severity of COVID-19 Infection: A Scoping Review
Objective: Scoping review aims to map and compile available studies on
periodontic bacteria on the severity of COVID-19 infection. Data: We selected
those written in English and published in 2019-2021 that discuss
periodontopathic bacteria on the severity of COVID-19 infection. Sources:
PubMed, Sage Journals, Science Direct, EBSCOhost, and Google Scholar. Study
Selection: 9 papers included in this scoping list consist of review articles (n=6),
case control study (n=2), and original hypotheses (n=1). Conclusion:
Periodontopathic bacteria can exacerbate COVID-19 infection through
aspiration of inflammatory bacteria in the lungs, and through the induction of
inflammatory cytokine production in particular the increased production of IL-6,
ACE2 expression, and cleavage of the Spike protein in SARS-CoV-2. Clinical
Significance: Periodontopathic bacteria have the potential to cause severity in
patients with COVID-19 infection.
Keywords: Periodontal Disease, Periodontopathic Bacteria, COVID-19, SARSCoV-2
