Prevalence of Periapical Abscess at Padjadjaran University Dental and Oral Hospital in 2018-2020
Introduction: A periapical abscess is a purulent inflammation localized to the apex
of the tooth. The health profile of the City of Bandung noted that periapical abscess
without sinus in 2019 was in the 15th of the 21 largest diseases in the city of
Bandung, with a total of 14,087 cases. A periapical abscess is one of the ten biggest
diseases at Padjadjaran University Dental and Oral Hospital. This study aims to
determine the prevalence of periapical abscess and its characteristics at RSGM
Unpad in 2018-2020.
Methods: This research is cross-sectional using secondary data, namely medical
records for the period January 2018 to December 2020. The sampling technique
used in this study was purposive sampling. Results: The prevalence of periapical
abscess at RSGM Unpad in 2018-2020 was 5.62%. Based on patient
characteristics, cases of periapical abscess were dominated by the late adolescent
age group (17-25 years) 26.38%. Patients with female gender more than male with
a percentage of 58,03% . Cases of acute periapical abscess had more percentage
of 92.57% compared to chronic 7.43%. Periapical abscess cases are more common
in the posterior teeth as well as in the mandibular jaw, both in the age group of
toddlers to children and the age group of teenagers to the elderly. Conclusion: The
prevalence of periapical abscess cases is low at RSGM Unpad in 2018-2020 was
5.62%, with the distribution of characteristics dominated by the late adolescent age
group (17-25 years), women, with acute conditions predominating and the
mandibular molars being the most infected.
