Comparison of Anti-Inflammatory Efficacy Of Curcumin in Curcuma Longa L. with Triamcinolone Acetonide for Minor Recurrent Aphthous Stomatitis: A Systematic Review
Introduction: Recurrent aphthous stomatitis (RAS) is the most common
inflammatory disorder in oral mucous characterized by recurrent ulceration. The
etiology of RAS is multifactorial and still unknown. Thus, the treatment of RAS has
not been determined. Turmeric (Curcuma longa L.) is a herb known for its
medicinal properties. It has been used from the ancient times and explored for
treatment of minor RAS due to its active constituent curcumin (diferuloylmethane).
Curcumin has various of therapeutic properties, one of them is anti-inflammatory.
This present study was conducted to evaluate comparison of efficacy of curcumin
(diferuloylmethane) in Curcuma longa L. with triamcinolone acetonide as antiinflammatory agent for minor recurrent aphthous stomatitis (RAS). Method: The
search was performed using boolean opeator with keywords ((aphthous stomatitis)
OR (aphthous ulcers)) AND (curcumin) in six databases, namely PubMed, Scopus,
EBSCOHost, Cochrane Library, ScienceDirect, and Google Scholar, also adapted
to the PICO (Population, Intervention, Comparison, Outcome) framework. The
inclusion criterias for articles were randomized controlled t rial (RCT) study
design; in the English language; full paper available; published in the range
between 2011-2021. This study was written by following the Preferred Reporting
Items for Systematic Review and Meta-analysis (PRISMA) guidelines and the risk
of bias of the articles was evaluated using RoB-tools JADAD Oxford Quality
Scoring System. Result: Five articles were included and eligible for analysis. Two
articles had low risk of bias and three others had high risk of bias. All of articles
were showed that curcumin is as effective as triamcinolone acetonid required for
regression in pain and size of the ulcers in minor RAS proved by the measurement
of pain score was 0 (zero) and ulcer size decreased gradually in both groups in the
last day of treatment. Conclusion: Curcumin in turmeric (Curcuma longa L.) is as
effective as triamcinolone acetonide and can be used as an alternative treatment
modality to topical corticosteroid in the treatment of minor RAS.
