Effect of Mangosteen (Garcinia Mangostana) Pericarp Extract towards the Healing Process of Periodontal Disease: A Literature Review
Introduction: Periodontal disease is a condition that affects alveolar bone and the supporting tissues around the root of the tooth. Recently, mangosteen (Garcinia mangostana) pericarp/rind/peel extract had shown the potential as a supporting treatment for the periodontal disease. The studies in related with mangosteen pericarp extract and periodontal disease had grown during the past decade. This study aimed to evaluate, through a literature review, if there is enough scientific evidence to ensure the effect of mangosteen pericarp extract as an adjunctive treatment of periodontal disease. Method: Searches were conducted in the databases PubMed, Google Scholar, Research Gate, ProQuest and EBSCOhost by using combinations of the key words mangosteen/ Garcinia mangostana/ periodontal disease/ periodontitis/ gingivitis. Studies published from year 2013-2018 were considered. Results: There were 14 journals included in the final review. The journals obtained were graded for level of evidence using Strength of Recommendation Taxonomy (SORT) grading system. Among 14 journals found, 2 journals were grade as A1, 2 were grade as A2, 5 as B2 and the other 5 journals were grade as C2. Overall, 2 randomize control trial along with 12 case control were identified. Discussion: All studies identified suggested that mangosteen rind extract is capable of reducing the symptoms of periodontal disease and improve the healing process. Conclusions: The overall reviewed literature shows mangosteen pericarp extract is effective in healing of periodontal disease when given with standard treatment, which are scaling and root planing. However, these data should be interpreted with caution as the method use in all result obtained were heterogeneous. The impressive results towards the efficacy of mangosteen pericarp extract in periodontal disease and the lack of high quality studies have support the need of futher higher evidence clinical studies.
