Frequency of Mandible 3rd Molar Impaction Angulation between Male and Female in Deutero-Malay by using Archived Digital Panoramic Radiograph
Objective: The purpose of this study is to describe the frequency of mandible 3rd molar impaction angulation in male and female of Deutero-Malay based on archived digital panoramic radiograph.
Method: Design of this research is simple descriptive on panoramic data obtained from a database for 100 samples which are 50 males and 50 females of Deutero-Malay with range from 17-26 years old of archived digital panoramic radiographs which were taken using purposive sampling method from Rumah Sakit Gigi dan Mulut in Fakultas Kedokteran Gigi Universitas Padjadjaran. These radiograph were selected based on the inclusion and exclusion and are classified by using Winters Classification.
Result: Mandible 3rd molar impaction in male results in 37% mesio-angular, 32% vertical, 25% horizontal and 6% disto-angular. Whereas in female results in 40% horizontal, 36% mesio-angular, 17% vertical, 4% disto-angular and 3% bucco-angular. Overall mandible 3rd molar impaction in male and female is mesio-angular position.
Discussion: This may be due to developmental position of primordial germ, jaw and tooth size, race, diet and genetics.
Conclusions: The frequency of impacted mandible 3rd molar in male tend to dominate in mesio-angular position whereas horizontal position are dominated in female. Overall frequency for both male and females, mesioangular impaction are the most common type which is tally to most of the international research results.
