Preliminary Reserch of Age Estimation based on Pulp Chamber Volume of Mandibular Third Molar
Pulp chamber volume decreases as the age increases due to the deposition of secondary dentin in pulp. This can be used as an indicator to estimate human age. The purpose of this research is to analyse the human age estimation using pulp chamber volume of mandibular third molar method.
The analytical research design was done on CBCT (Vatech Korea 2016) of 172 mandibular third molar on 86 deutero-Malay patients from secondary data in Dentomaxillo facial Radiology Installation Dental Hospital, Faculty of Dentistry, Universitas Padjadjaran between age ranges of 18 to 60 using purposive non-random sampling technique. Dicom data of CBCT images were processed using a three-dimensional segmentation application (ITK-SNAP), measured and then statistically analysed to derive regression formula for age estimation of male, female, male and female respectively.
The result of this study proven that the third molar can be used to estimate age on individual with the regression formulae of age = 70.759 1.421 (Pulp Chamber Volume) with R2 of 0.928 for male and age = 68.775 1.385 (Pulp Chamber Volume) with R2 of 0.942 for female respectively. The combined regression formulae for both sexes produced is age = 70.705 1.448 (Pulp Chamber Volume) with R2 of 0.961.
The conclusion of this study shows that age can be investigated by pulp chamber volume of mandibular third molar on CBCT using regression analysis in deutero-Malay sub race.
