Preliminary Research of Age Estimation Based on Pulp Chamber Volume of Mandibular Second Molar
Secondary dentin deposition with increasing age can be used as an indicator
for age estimation. The purpose of this study is to analyse the human age estimation
using pulp chamber volume of mandibular second molar method of patients from the
CBCT database in the Radiology Installation of Universitas Padjadjaran Dental
Hospital, Bandung
The analytical research design was done on 192 cone beam computed
tomography imaged (Vatech Korea 2006) aged between 12-60 years old Deutero-
Malay subrace were obtained using purposive non-random sampling from the
Radiology Installation of Universitas Padjadjaran Dental Hospital, Bandung. The
CBCT images obtained of mandibular second molar were processed using an open
source 3D image software (ITK-SNAP 3.6.0), recorded and analysed statistically to
develop a regression equation for age estimation.
The result of this research for male mandibular second molar: AGE= 98.658-
1.793(Pulp Chamber Volume) with R2 = 0.951, female mandibular second molar:
AGE = 92.734-2.258 (Pulp Chamber Volume) with R2 = 0.963 and combined
equation for both sexes was AGE = 97.1703 2.037 (Pulp Chamber Volume) with R2
= 0.975.
The conclusion of this study shows that age can be investigated by pulp
chamber volume of mandibular second molar on CBCT radiographs using regression
analysis.
